The following list is a list of the most popular songs of 2012, based on the Hot 100 charts on billboard.com. This is not a list of my favorite songs of the year in case there is any confusion. In order to compile this list, I kept track of every song that made an appearance in the top 10 of the Hot 100 specifically noting how many weeks they were in the top 10, how many weeks they were in the top 5 (if any), and how many weeks they were #1 (if any). I then devised a simple formula that gave them a certain number of points based on these totals that would determine the most popular songs of the year. More points were awarded for a top 5 appearance than a top 10 appearance and most points were awarded for making it to #1. Yes, it is true that there is still a week and a half left of 2012 at my submission of this list, but the billboard charts that were released this past week were for the week of December 28th, meaning that the charts released next week would be considered 2013 in my book, so the timing is appropriate. You may be surprised at what songs did or what songs didn't make the list, although if you followed music this year, none of these choices should be too much of a shocker. Here they are in descending order with their corresponding music videos:

This was for the US. His song spent 8 weeks at #1, 20 weeks in the top 5, and 24 weeks in the top 10 this year. Shortly after I finished this, I found that billboard has their own end of the year chart that is based on radio airplay and Gotye is #1 there as well. So whichever way you look at it, Gotye's song is the #1 song in the US this year
Gotye at #1, really? Hmm, was this for the US, International, or total world combined records?
